About - Shari MacFarlane - Coming Together

Shari's passion for spreading the joy and therapeutic quality of art has been a part of her life for quite some time. Over 30 years ago, she taught art at her daughters' elementary school as a volunteer, since the sponsored program was minimal. Along About Shari MacFarlanewith other women from her former church, she created batik fabric to be used in clothing for Vietnamese children orphaned by the war. And she has taught creative workshops at teen conferences and senior centers. Shari currently teaches private lessons and classes to share her knowledge and passion with others of all ages, and it is not unusual for her to hold an impromptu workshop on a group retreat.

About Shari MacFarlaneFor over 20 years, Shari ran her own successful business, Creek Crossing Crafts, hand-painting clothing and accessories and appliquéing sweatshirts. In recent years, a period of emotional stress led Shari back to her studio, where she could express herself the way she has encouraged others to for so much of her life. She lets her heart lead her brush, often working in collage, where something like the handwriting of a loved one might serve as inspiration for the beginning of a painting. The resulting paintings are a manifestation of turning grief into joy, and give her the strength to put the next foot forward.

About Shari MacFarlaneShari's paintings are intuitive; she does not know what she will be painting when she picks up a brush, and she still may not know the subject matter after hours of painting. She may work on that painting again many weeks later and the final subject will reveal itself almost like a dream.

Shari is the proud single mother of five children. She has three adult daughters, a graphic designer, an interior designer, and an architect and two teenage boys, both industrious and creative in their own right. She also has three grandchildren.

Shari studied Art at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her recent instruction includes Watercolor Painting with Shirley Blanchard, Abstract Drawing and Painting with Joyce McCarten of the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia, and Collage and Abstract Painting with Tara Funk Grim of Bethany Beach, Delaware.

Shari is a member of the Vienna (Virginia) Arts Society, the Virginia Watercolor Society and the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA.
